Melanistic Deer

Here's a cool shot of an unusually dark fawn. According to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Facebook site, this photo was taken in the Texas Hill Country. The Hill Country seems to have a higher occurrence of melanistic deer than any other part of the state.

Curiously, many black panther reports come out of the Hill Country as well. Interesting.

  1. Just saw a small black deer with 4 others tonight in the grasslands area of Alvord TX. Had to look twice. Hard to believe it was black.

  3. I think I saw 2 black deer just east of Coleman on 84 this evening. I wanted to turn around just to see if that was really what I saw. I started googling black deer because I didn't want to feel crazy lol.
